About this article: ARIS VIETNAM wrote this article and is one of the companies listed. Companies appear in alphabetical order, not by rank. Details for each company come from its official website and press releases, checked in October 2026. If anything has changed, please let us know and we will update it.

According to the 2025 Offshore Development White Paper, Vietnam is the most common offshore destination for Japanese companies, at 43%. More software development companies in Vietnam now have offices in Japan as well, so comparing them takes time.

This guide starts with a few criteria for evaluating a partner, then compares ten companies in a table and in short profiles. For how offshore development works end to end, see our guide to offshore software development in Vietnam.

Five things to check when choosing a partner

  1. Experience in your domain. Healthcare systems, equipment control software and legacy financial systems call for very different business knowledge. Ask about similar projects, not just the technology list.
  2. How they work with the Japanese side. Is there a Japanese entity or office? Who will you talk to day to day: a BrSE, a communicator or a PM? Will design documents be in Japanese or English?
  3. Information security. ISO/IEC 27001 and Privacy Mark (Pマーク) are a starting point. It is also worth asking how they manage access rights, handle client data and govern the use of AI tools on projects.
  4. Quality process. CMMI shows that a process has been appraised. How review, testing and reporting will work on your project is something to confirm directly.
  5. Size fit. Larger firms can usually add people faster. Smaller firms often put experienced engineers directly on the project. Which suits you depends on the project.

Choosing an engagement model

Whichever company you pick, the engagement model has a large effect on cost and risk.

  • Fixed scope (請負型): Scope, cost and schedule are agreed up front. Works best when requirements are clear and unlikely to change.
  • Lab / ODC (ラボ型): A dedicated team on a monthly basis. Suits products under continuous development and teams that want to keep system knowledge in one place.
  • Combined: Stable parts on fixed scope, changing parts on a lab team. Many real projects end up here.

See ARIS's engagement models page for details on each.

Frequently asked questions

How should I start comparing software development companies in Vietnam?

Start with domain experience and how the company works with the Japanese side. Then compare security, quality process and size to narrow the list. The comparison table above is meant as a first filter.

What is the benefit of choosing a company with an office in Japan?

Contracts and meetings in Japanese are easier, and it is clearer who to contact when something goes wrong. In most cases, though, the development itself is done by the team in Vietnam. Along with the Japan office, check who your day-to-day contact will be and how information will flow.

How much does offshore development in Vietnam cost?

It depends heavily on engineer skill, team size and engagement model, so a single figure is not very useful. Our guide to offshore development benefits, cost and process explains how pricing works. In practice, the most reliable approach is to request quotes from two or three companies on the same terms and compare the breakdowns.

Are ISO 27001 or CMMI certifications required?

They are not required, but they show that a company has some structure around security and development process. Scope differs between companies, so check that the team working on your project is covered.

Is it safe to work with a company that uses AI in development?

What matters is less whether AI is used than whether the scope of use and the review process are clear. Before signing, ask which tools are used, how your data is handled and how reviews are recorded.

Closing

Treat this list as a starting point. Before deciding, talk with two or three companies, ask about similar projects and, if possible, start with a small engagement.

If your project involves software for manufacturing equipment, or you want to use AI in development with clear controls, contact ARIS VIETNAM.
