Challenge
The client had worked with offshore teams before. Their concern was not technical skill but communication: would their intent be understood, would nuances get lost, would every exchange take too long?
What we did
A Japanese-speaking bridge SE acted as the single point of contact for feature additions and spec changes to the existing codebase. We confirmed specifications proactively and verified our understanding before each release.
After the feature work was complete, the client asked us to continue with ongoing maintenance: understanding the existing code and delivering fixes and improvements without affecting features in production.
Results
- During the feature phase the client told us our understanding of requests was accurate, our responses were fast and precise, and the communication was "as good as, or better than, with a Japanese team."
- They described the pricing as reasonable and mentioned introducing us to partner companies.
- After a maintenance release they commented that the code was "cleaner and much improved" — feedback that had moved from communication to code quality.
What we learned
Offshore development is often chosen for cost and capacity, but a long-term relationship is built on understanding requests correctly, being easy to reach when something goes wrong, and making the system a little better with every change. Trust accumulates within a single project, not just at delivery.
